Hyundai Sonata 2.0T vs Toyota Camry XSE: which is the better daily driver?

Ride With MieeVideo first published September 20225 min read

Both are 2015 midsize sedans in their sportiest trims, and both are common on Nigerian roads. We put the Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0T next to the Toyota Camry XSE and let one host argue for each.

This article is adapted from the Ride With Miee video. Watch the full episode for the cars, the banter and the drag race talk.

The short answer

The Sonata gives you more features for less money. The Camry gives you a bigger engine and the Toyota name for reliability. If you want the most value for your naira, look hard at the Sonata. If you want the car that worries you least in five years, the Camry is the safer bet.

At a glance

  • Pick the Sonata 2.0T if you want modern tech: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise, lane keep assist and a panoramic roof.
  • Pick the Camry XSE if you want a naturally aspirated V6 and the easiest car to service and resell in Nigeria.
  • Either way, the car's history and how it was maintained matter more than the badge.

The case for the Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0T

The 2015 Sonata opened a new generation and looks nothing like the car before it. In Sport 2.0T trim it is the most equipped car in this comparison.

The summary from the Hyundai side: you get all of this for less money than the Camry.

The case for the Toyota Camry XSE

The XSE sits between the SE and XLE trims of the seventh generation Camry, taking the sporty look of one and the comfort of the other.

The summary from the Toyota side: this is reliability, and a turbo four still makes many Nigerian buyers nervous.

The real question: turbo four or V6?

This is the argument that decides most sales. The Camry's V6 has a long record in Nigeria, mechanics know it well and parts are everywhere. The Sonata's turbo engine is quicker off the line and can be tuned, but turbo fours still carry a reputation here for costly repairs when servicing is skipped.

So before you buy a Sonata 2.0T, ask for service records and have the turbo and cooling system checked. Before you buy a Camry XSE, check that the gearbox shifts cleanly; our Sonata host felt it was slow to respond.

How to choose

If you want a well equipped, modern sedan and you will service it on time, the Sonata 2.0T is hard to beat for the money. If you want simple ownership and strong resale value, the Camry XSE is the safer buy.

Whichever way you lean, work out the yearly cost before you commit. The purchase price is only the start.
